Arlington Heights residents like you depend on nursing homes to provide proper care for your loved ones as they grow older. Unfortunately, not every nursing home will offer the quality of care you deserve. At the Law Offices of Jeffrey E. Martin, LLC, we will discuss some signs of neglect to keep an eye out for.

Neglect differs from abuse in that it is sometimes unintentional and can be a side-effect of an overcrowded and busy facility. Sometimes, there simply aren’t enough members on staff to cover all of the residents in the building. This can lead to some residents being overlooked in favor of those with more pronounced problems.

Signs of neglect can show itself in physical, mental and behavioral symptoms. Physically, you may notice bedsores and signs of dehydration or hunger. Mentally, your loved one may be more high-strung, anxious, or prone to bouts of anger. Their thought patterns may become more negative and they may exhibit signs of depression.

Behaviorally, they could feel unstable and unsafe. This may lead to them acting out in a way that would be considered out of character. For some, they may become snappish toward others. Others may withdraw partially or completely from communicating with people. If they feel unsafe in an environment or situation, they may become reticent and withdrawn.
