“Sounds of [hybrid] Silence” could result in more pedestrian accidents due to hybrid vehicles being nearly soundless when they are being operated by battery rather than gasoline engine.
Recently the National Highway Traffic Safety Registration has proposed a rule which would require automobile makers to provide additional noise in these hybrid vehicles when traveling at speeds under 18 miles an hour. The goal is to make certain pedestrians can easily hear electric cars over background noises, especially in cities. Until then, if you are driving a hybrid vehicle, be mindful when your vehicle is operating on battery power alone that pedestrians may not realize that you are approaching and use greater caution.
